Contributes about 30% of the daily energy in our diets. Fats are used to insulate our bodies, cushion our organs, and help our nerves (the things that help us feel) to function. Fats can be found in many forms. Saturated fat is hard on our bodies and can lead to problems such as heart attack - saturated fat comes mainly from animal sources such as meat and butter, but can be found in coconut and palm oil. Unsaturated fats are found in fats from plant sources - unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature (think of olive or vegetable oil). We need fat everyday in order to maintain proper body function; therefore it is important that we get enough "good" fats in our diets everyday such as olive oil, fatty fish -salmon for example- and the fats found in nuts and legumes.
