Grab and Go meals at the Hudson State Service Center

July 31, 2017

Monday through Friday, parents visiting the Hudson State Service Center in Newark have the opportunity to pick up free breakfast and lunch meals for their children thanks to the Food Bank’s Grab and Go program. Meals are available starting at 11:00 a.m. and are served until 11:30 a.m.

Driver George Lunski brings coolers full of bagged meals and beverages into the center each weekday. The coolers are set up in the family resource center just off the front entrance.

On this particular day, families were thankful for the chance to get meals for their kids. After filling up bags full of meals and drinks, one mom selected gently used clothing from the service center’s clothing bank. After meeting with a caseworker, one dad stopped by to pick up meals for his three children. Several other families stopped by during the 30-minute pick up time.

Grab and Go offers kids a flexible, convenient way to get healthy, free meals over the summer months! Unlike traditional summer meal programs, Grab and Go allows children to take their meals home to consume.

Partnering with a State Service Center enables us to serve families in a location that is both convenient and safe. While families are tending to other business within the center, they can also ensure that their children receive two nutritious meals! On Fridays kids receive meals for the weekend as well!

All meals are prepared and packed by committed volunteers.

In addition to the Hudson State Service Center, free meals are also available to the community at 15 other sites throughout Delaware. Sites that are open to the public include Dickey Park in Newark (Monday-Friday; 11:00 a.m.), Centennial Park in Bear (Monday-Friday; 12:45 p.m.) and Wilton Park in New Castle (Monday-Friday; 1:00 p.m.). The remaining sites operate in neighborhoods to fill gaps in services for children who live in those communities.

The program is made possible thanks to generous funding from:

  • Kraft Foods
  • The Harry K Foundation
  • Giant Food’s Our Family Foundation
  • Sallie Mae
  • The New York Times through Feeding America
  • Citizens Bank

Traditional summer meal sites where children consume meals on site are still available throughout the state. To find a free meal location near you, text FOOD to 877-877, dial 2-1-1 or click here.
