Culinary School Spotlight: Nathaniel Frisby

November 27, 2019

Nathaniel Frisby recently graduated from high school and learned about The Culinary School at the Food Bank of Delaware through his mom.

He admits that culinary school was something he wanted to do when he was younger, but was apprehensive about going back to school.

Thanks to the 14-week Delaware Food Works culinary training program, Nathaniel has learned a lot including ServSafe food safety, the proper way to cook foods and use a knife and and how to utilize speed in the kitchen.

Some of Nathaniel’s favorite things to make include macaroni and cheese, steak, chicken, soup and sauteed vegetables.

Nathaniel and his classmate, Isaiah, had an opportunity to make butternut squash soup for the Food Bank of Delaware’s Halloween Blue Jean Ball. It was a hit with guests!

In addition, he had the chance to work at the Food Bank’s Discover Cafe as a student worker.

“It was very eye opening. It made me feel confident to go out and work,” he says.

The skills he has learned in the kitchen have also been helpful when working at his family’s candy shop, Royal Butterflies Candy and Gifts. He says that ServSafe training has been the most valuable part of class. “I have been implementing ServSafe at the shop,” he explains.

A variety of guest chefs have visited the class this session; his favorite was Chef Jim Berman who conducted a pasta demo.

The pasta demo paid off because Nathaniel’s corguette carbonara pasta was second runner up for the class’ kitchen final last week. The judges said his pasta was cooked perfectly. The dish will be featured at the class’ graduation next month.

This week, Nathaniel is interviewing for a job at Barclays corporate cafeteria. With graduation just two weeks away, he will be thankful to obtain employment before graduating.

In the future, he’d like to open his own cafe.

For students considering The Culinary School, Nathaniel advises, “Take the opportunity. I wasn’t going to do it at all. I actually gave my mom push back when it came to going to school. It’s really warming in a sense. It’s an open environment. You are learning along others who are trying to learn the same. It’s been fun. We’re like a family.”
