Who doesn’t love the taste of freshly picked fruits and vegetables? At the Food Bank of Delaware, we believe good food does more than satisfy hunger — it brings people together and fuels healthier lives. That’s why we made the 3.5-acre Milford Garden a central part of our new facility.

Located right at the entrance to our Milford campus, this thriving garden is more than just a beautiful green space. It’s a community-powered source of fresh, seasonal produce that supports our neighbors facing food insecurity — and it’s alive with berry bushes, young fruit trees, and rows of vibrant vegetables.

The garden operates year-round, growing a wide variety of crops that thrive in Delaware’s climate. Led by our experienced garden manager and supported by seasonal interns and volunteers, we follow sustainable farming practices to ensure high-quality harvests and care for the environment.

Most of the produce grown here is distributed through our Healthy Pantry Center, helping families in need bring fresh, nutritious food to the table. It’s also a vital ingredient in The Culinary School’s training program, giving students a chance to cook with unique fruits, vegetables, and herbs they might not otherwise encounter. Soon, you’ll even be able to enjoy our fresh harvests in meals served at the on-site Café.

The Milford Garden is home to:

  • Four high tunnels (greenhouses) for extended growing
  • Field and raised bed growing areas
  • A young fruit orchard
  • A produce packing barn
  • A peaceful Veterans’ Memorial Garden

And we’re proud to be located right across the street from the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club and the Delaware Veterans Home. That proximity has helped the garden blossom into a true community hub. In our very first summer, children explored STEM through hands-on garden activities, while veterans found a welcoming, shaded space to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

At the heart of it all is the garden’s packing barn — fully equipped for harvesting and sorting produce, and designed with community in mind. Its spacious overhang provides the perfect venue for events like our Farmer & The Chef fundraiser, senior health fairs, career fairs, and our annual Spring Plant Sale — all supporting the Food Bank of Delaware and the wider community.
