Support, guidance pave the way to financial independence

Christina’s journey is a reminder of what courage, support and the right guidance can make possible.

When she reached out to the Stand By Me program for financial coaching, she was navigating one of the hardest moments of her life. After leaving an unsafe situation and moving into a shelter, Christina was determined to rebuild. She found temporary work, but it wasn’t enough to move forward on her own.

That’s when she connected with Ray, our Economic Mobility Coordinator and a Stand By Me coach. Through private, confidential coaching, Ray helped her tackle budgeting, rebuild her credit, and explore new career opportunities.

Over nearly two years of working together, Christina gained confidence, updated her résumé, and took bold steps toward a better future. She enrolled in commercial driver training — a leap outside her comfort zone — and discovered new skills and new confidence along the way.

Her determination paid off. Christina relocated for better opportunities, earned her CDL endorsement, and now makes nearly $25 an hour, plus a $5,000 sign‑on bonus. She’s already planning to earn additional certifications to keep advancing.

“Ray was offering counseling for economic mobility, and I got a better job,” Christina shared. “I’m fully functioning, and there’s no failure option for me because I have to take care of me.”

Ray continues to check in, cheering her on as she grows. And Christina continues to prove what’s possible when resilience meets the right support.
