Welcome to The Kitchen School, a partnership between the Food Bank and the Delaware Restaurant Association, offering adults with disabilities specialized food service training so they can get jobs in food and hospitality industries.  Sessions are offered several times a year at both our Milford and Newark, Delaware locations.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, The Kitchen School is a free to all students who apply and are accepted to the 12-week program.   Our team of teachers and counselors specialize in working with individuals with disabilities and are with you every step of the way, offering top-notch training, support to help you succeed, and job placement and transition support once you’re hired!  All course materials, including tuition, meals, uniforms, supplies and transportation are included.

THE DETAILS

The Kitchen School’s 12-week curriculum includes group instruction and individualized training in our professional kitchens in Newark and Milford, Delaware.

After eight weeks of in-class/kitchen training, students spend an additional four weeks transitioning to permanent employment through on-site job coaching.

The Food Bank’s professional chef instructors and job coaches:

  • Provide 276 hours of hands-on cooking skills training and work experience
  • Train students to enter food service workplaces, including teaching soft skills and employer expectations
  • Teach students kitchen safety
  • Provide students an opportunity to earn a ServSafe® Food Handler Certification
  • Teach sanitation procedures
  • Assist students in finding partner employers whose needs match student strengths
  • Students receive support and develop an individualized plan needed to enter a workplace, including transportation options.
  • Provide support to students and employers for at least one year after graduation.

The cost to attend the program is $10,699, but thanks to the generosity of funders, no student pays out of pocket to attend.
