Sadly, millions of Americans are facing uncertainty about how they will put food on the table come November 1.
November SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – formerly food stamps) benefits are delayed — a devastating blow for families who rely on this critical support to feed their households.
Fortunately, on Wednesday, Governor Matt Meyer declared a state of emergency, allowing the state to fund November food benefits on a week-by-week basis until the government reopens through the Delaware Food Benefit Relief Funds. It’s welcome news and a testament to Delaware’s commitment to caring for its neighbors.
Even with this relief, we are anticipating increased demand next week as families await food benefits from the state and federal workers continue to go without pay. We are also bracing for a busy holiday season. The high cost of living continues to stretch budgets thin.
To meet increased demands as we approach Thanksgiving, we are increasing both hours for our Healthy Pantry Centers in Newark and Milford and the number of times neighbors can visit; we are also working with our network of community partners to ensure they have the food they need to serve our community.
Together, we can ensure that no Delawarean faces the holidays with an empty table. Your compassion and generosity make it possible for us to respond swiftly in moments of crisis — and to continue providing hope, dignity and nourishment all year long.
