Passion to Profession: Food Bank of Delaware’s Culinary School Changes Lives
August 4, 2025
If you’ve ever dreamed of turning your love for cooking into a career, The Culinary School at the Food Bank of Delaware might be the life-changing opportunity you’ve been looking for.
Just ask Gwen Ratlief.
A single mom, full-time student, and night-shift CNA, Gwen is living proof that with determination—and the right support system—you can chase your goals and build a better future.
“I don’t like sitting still,” Gwen laughs. “Even though I come in here tired every day, I really enjoy cooking. This is a personal love of mine.”
Real Skills. Real Kitchens. Real Support.
The Culinary School is more than just a training program. It’s a launchpad for adults who want to break into the food service industry and gain the confidence, hands-on experience, and certifications they need to succeed.
Here’s what students like Gwen receive:
- 420 hours of in-depth culinary instruction
- Training in a professional kitchen environment
- Basic and advanced kitchen techniques
- ServSafe® certification
- A paid two-week internship
- Job placement assistance
- Uniforms, textbooks, and a set of professional knives—all provided
Classes are held Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., led by seasoned professionals like Executive Chef Tim Hunter and Chef Instructors Tish Badamshin and Adrienne Hall.
Whether you’re starting fresh or looking to pivot careers, the program is designed to meet students where they are and help them reach the next level.
“We’re getting a real culinary experience,” says Gwen. “The instructors care, and we learn everything from knife skills to kitchen safety. It’s a great place to grow.”
More Than a School—A Community
For Gwen, the Culinary School fits into a busy life filled with purpose. In addition to her classes, she’s building her own home through the Milford Housing Development Corporation and helping on her brother’s food truck – Bub’s Grub — and at her mother’s business, the Little Lincoln Store.
She doesn’t see obstacles—she sees opportunities. And the Culinary School is one of the most important tools in her toolkit.
Her class will graduate on Aug. 19, a milestone worth celebrating.
But Gwen’s not stopping there. She plans to attend nursing school next and continue helping her family’s food business.
“I’ll keep going after the RN,” she says with a determined smile.
