Volunteer Embraces Career Change with the LOGIC Program
September 16, 2025
For Steve, a longtime Food Bank of Delaware volunteer, service to the community opened the door to an entirely new career path.
He first came to the Food Bank to give back, inspired by a simple trip to the grocery store with his wife. “Me and my wife went to Food Lion to buy stuff to bring to the Food Bank,” he said.
When he came to drop off the donation, he realized people both came to the Food Bank for assistance and to volunteer. Steve volunteered for almost three years before applying for the warehousing/logistics training program, L.O.G.I.C. (Logistics, Operations, General Warehousing and Inventory Control)
For him, it was a chance to shift careers after working as a direct support professional in group homes. “I wanted to do something different from my previous job,” he explained. “It’s a career transition, so I’m learning new stuff every day. So literally, everything, the reach truck, forklifts, and the class, also, it’s amazing. So, it’s a new venture for me.”
He says the training has not only provided valuable technical skills, but also life skills. “I didn’t know much about, like, the finances. You know, I’ve learned a lot from the life skills, how to go about mortgages and all that kind of stuff.”
Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, he has lived in the United States for eight years. He says the opportunities available here have made this career change possible: “The difference, I’ll say, opportunities. You have more opportunities [in America]. These kind of programs—we don’t have such access over there.”
Through LOGIC, he has already earned his OSHA-10 and Certified Logistics Associate credentials and is preparing for his Certified Logistics Technician exam. His favorite piece of equipment so far? “Walking pallet jack. That’s my favorite…I love that, it’s fun.”
Looking to the future, he’s excited about the wide range of career opportunities in logistics and material handling. His advice to other potential students, “Go for it. It’s a game changer, trust me…yeah, it’s a game changer.”
For him, the program is more than just job training—it’s about growth, opportunity, and continuing his lifelong commitment to service. “It’s a wonderful program, yeah? And, to be honest, anybody who wants to give it a shot, I’d just say go for it.”
