At the Food Bank of Delaware, volunteers like Milford-resident Bill Shupe are at the core of our mission. His path to volunteering began after graduating college when he moved from Philadelphia to Milford. When his now-adult children were young, he always enjoyed volunteering through coaching Little League, Parks & Recreation activities, and football. They grew up, and he retired, but he wanted to continue giving back. He sought out volunteer opportunities and quickly found his place at the Food Bank, where he now is a familiar face twice a week.
For Bill, the most rewarding part of volunteering is the connection he forms with the people he helps. His volunteer work is in our Healthy Pantry Center where he enjoys interacting with individuals and families, often having conversations that go beyond helping them select food. “Some people don’t have anyone to talk to, and you get to talk to them,” he said.
One of his favorite activities is stocking the shelves, particularly during the 8-9 a.m. shift. His past experience working in a grocery store in Philadelphia gave him skills that he applies to his volunteer work. He enjoys the process of organizing and ensuring that the shelves are fully stocked, and he finds the entire experience rewarding, especially when he sees the appreciation from those he serves. He says that the thank-you’s, the smiles, and the positive feedback are constant reminders that his work is truly making a difference.
Bill also wants to highlight the high-quality produce and food that the Food Bank provides. “The good produce and food that we give them in the baskets—it’s all good stuff, good quality,” he says, emphasizing the importance of the resources we provide to the community.
For anyone considering volunteering, Bill encourages others to get involved, sharing that volunteering has helped him stay active and feel engaged with the community after retirement. “It helps with talking to people, and it makes me feel like I am doing something,” he says. Bill is a testament to the many ways volunteering can bring fulfillment and connection.
