2,613 children receive free meals through Summer Grab and Go program

September 20, 2019

The last days of the summer season are officially here and we are excited to announce that we distributed 37,856 meals to 2,613 children this summer through our Grab and Go program.

The privately-funded Grab and Go program provided a convenient way for kids to receive nutritious foods during the summer months. This program enabled children to grab a bag full of meals from a location close to their home for consumption at home. Sites included community parks, state service centers, neighborhoods and more.

The meals were assembled by volunteers and given out every weekday, with additional meals supplied for the weekend. Meals usually included a sandwich, snack, milk, and bottled water.  Meal kits of shelf-stable foods were also provided to children.

“Feeding our children is a priority at the Food Bank of Delaware. We know how important proper nutrition is for a child’s development,” said President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “We are grateful to our volunteers and our generous sponsors who made this program possible.  Providing meals to kids in a way that is accessible and convenient would not have been possible without their support.”

Summer 2019 Grab and Go sponsors included:

  • Harry K Foundation
  • Citizens Bank
  • Share Our Strength
  • Islamic Relief USA
  • Sysco Eastern Maryland
