Healthy Pantry brings smiles on one man’s birthday visit here

January 24, 2024

It’s likely that most people would not decide to observe their birthday by visiting the Food Bank of Delaware’s Healthy Pantry Center at our new Milford facility.  However, Ray, a 59-year-old Milford man, smiled as he patiently waited his turn to “shop.”  A seasoned mechanic,  he said he’s been out of work since July due to prostate cancer, and he’s had to rely on SNAP benefits for food.

The pantry can provide additional nourishment, and hopefully move him along on the road to better health.

This trip was his first connection to the Food Bank so he didn’t know what to expect,  plus this pantry – resembling a small grocery store — just opened. The pantry provides emergency food from 9 a.m. until noon and from 1-3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday each week. It is closed from noon until 1:30 p.m. for restocking.

Neighbors who are unable to drive or lack transportation may sign up for home delivery by clicking here.

Visitors can enter the pantry waiting area through the first door on the right adjacent to the main entrance. Please bring proof of Delaware residency; most people also find it helpful to bring bags for their groceries.

A volunteer will assist with electronic registration, then guide people as they select foods that match their family’s needs and tastes. Frequently, home and health-care items – such as laundry and personal care products – are also available.

Volunteers say they find time spend helping their neighbors is rewarding as well.

Needless to say, Ray was looking forward to the opportunity. “I hope to get back to work soon,” he said.

The pantry is located inside our new facility at 102 Delaware Veterans Blvd., Milford; a pantry is also available at our Newark site, 222 Lake Drive, Newark, DE 19702.  Click here to learn more.
