‘It’s wonderful!’ Home delivery benefits family with no transportation

It’s been a long, hard winter for Denise. On a day when the thermometer barely climbed above freezing, this Newark resident relied on portable electric heaters to keep the house warm. The oil tank was empty, and so was her bank account.

Like many of our neighbors, Denise said she learned about the Food Bank of Delaware’s services through a friend who visited our Healthy Pantry Center. When Denise had transportation, she was able to pick up a box of food every other week. “Now, I can’t get there,” she explained.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Denise worked in customer service at a big box store. She’s no longer employed and continues to find a new job. “I’m not working now; I’m applying for jobs. I just want something,” she said.

Denise does all the cooking for the three adults in her household, and repeatedly expresses her appreciation for home delivery. “The service is excellent, and I’m very grateful for it. It’s wonderful. I can’t get there, and I’m sure other people need this too,” she said.
