Neighbors connect with Food Bank’s amenities in Milford

October 9, 2024

It’s a great thing when neighbors are also friends! Since the Food Bank of Delaware’s Milford facility relocated to our beautiful new site in January, we’ve had the opportunity to connect to new friends and neighbors.

One of them is Sheridan Dean, a resident at the Delaware Veterans Home just next door. Dean is a familiar face in the Café’, and he’s assisted in the Garden as well. He also attended our recent Farmer & The Chef event just last month.

First, we need to thank him for his military service: he is a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-68. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he worked first as a cable splicer and then in telecommunications for the phone company. He loves gardening too. “In Brooklyn, I was president of the garden association, and I became a master composter.”

Then came retirement! He and his wife decided to leave the city behind and chose a quiet Active Adult community in Bridgeville as home. “It’s very nice, with a lot of activities,” Dean said.

When he moved into the Delaware Veterans Home, the Food Bank’s new facility was still on the drawing board. “None of this was here, so I watched it going up. Then I came over to see the amenities, and I met JR ,” he said. JR Duffy is Milford’s Café Coordinator.

He added his email address to the Café’s list so he could receive the weekly menus in his inbox. Now, he’s made friends and enjoys lunch as well. “I come here for whatever meals I’d like to have. It’s meatloaf today, and that’s delicious,” he added.

As for his experience at our inaugural Farmer & The Chef event, Dean provides rave reviews. “It was fantastic. I guess I have to wait for another year. It was fabulous.”

Thanks, and we appreciate your neighborliness!
