Summer Meals in Dickey Park

The oppressive heat and humidity didn’t stop Dickey Park’s youth from coming to get their free lunch last week.  Lanier Williams, our mobile meals driver, was pleased with the turnout.  He says that this is just one of the several stops he makes during the day to feed the kids.

They all know him by name, and him theirs.  Along with a site coordinator, he got the job done.  “This is one of our quickest stops,” he said. “They’re in and out of here.”

The summer meal program at Dickey Park is thanks to Giant Food’s Our Family Foundation’s donation of $69,000 to help fund mobile meal sites throughout the state. Through the program, a Food Bank of Delaware driver travels from site to site delivering and serving meals to kids. At the conclusion of the meal, the driver packs up and heads to the next site.

Last week’s menu featured chicken salad, fruit, and milk.  Kids also dyed eggs with our park coordinator to add some fun to their meal.  Dickey Park is one of four stops in New Castle County that Lanier and his fellow mobile meal drivers take each day.  They feed kids who are hungry, appreciative, and ready to have some fun.  Many of the same children come each to get their lunch and chat with Lanier.  He takes his job seriously and loves what he does. His energy and drive is what keeps the kids coming back and brings new ones each summer.  Hopefully the turnout continues to grow—more children deserve to meet someone as wonderful as Lanier!dickey park 1web dickeypark4web dickeypark3webdickeypark5web
