Volunteer Spotlight: Nivek Gahunia
April 26, 2017
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month! Throughout the month we will highlight the stories of volunteers who are committed to creating a community free of hunger!
Twice a week Nivek Gahunia spends time volunteering at the Food Bank.
Volunteers like Nivek are the heart and soul of the Food Bank of Delaware. Last year, the Food Bank received more than 18,000 volunteer visits for a total of 46,123 donated hours! This is the equivalent of almost 22 full-time staff members!
We can’t do what we do without the generosity of volunteers.
Nivek enjoys meeting new people. He says there is a nice diversity of people who help out. From corporate volunteers to college students, there is something for everyone at the Food Bank of Delaware.
One of Nivek’s favorite tasks in the volunteer room is packing bags for the Backpack Program for kids.
“It’s all for the kids,” he says.
In addition to helping those in need, Nivek says he gets a good workout at the Food Bank!
“I always feel good after I volunteer here,” he says.
Nivek encourages other community members to volunteer at the Food Bank. Meeting new people, helping others and doing a variety of tasks make volunteering a memorable experience he says.
