CANgineering, the Food Bank’s food structure competition, is back!

March 29, 2022

After a hiatus due to the pandemic, the Food Bank of Delaware announced today that its food structure building contest, CANgineering, is back! Organizations interested in building structures out of nonperishable food items have until April 29 to register for the food drive and structure-building contest.

CANgineering supports the year-round hunger relief efforts of the Food Bank of Delaware. With more than 114,000 food-insecure Delawareans, many who are experiencing food insecurity for the first time ever due to the pandemic, the competition is needed now more than ever.

After the holiday season, food donations from the community drop significantly. CANgineering was created in 2011 as a fun way to bolster food donations, while encouraging spirited competition amongst local organizations (a school-based competition will be available this fall). Teams sign up, hold a food drive and use the items they have collected to create structures. Over the years, teams have built lighthouses, the Wilmington Blue Rocks’ mascot Mr. Celery, castles, barns, school buses, slices of pie and so much more!

Competition timeline:

“This will be my first CANgineering competition,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Cathy Kanefsky. “I have seen pictures of the amazing structures over the years, so I am so excited to visit local organizations to see this year’s structures! After more than two years of working from home and social distancing, we know that Delaware organizations are looking for fun ways to engage employees and bring everyone together! What better way than helping our food insecure neighbors? I cannot wait to see how much food is collected to help our community!”
