May Employee of the Month: Meg Carroll
May 18, 2026
Congratulations to Meg Carroll, our May Employee of the Month! Recognized through our Seeds of Appreciation program, Meg embodies our values and demonstrates an unwavering commitment to our mission every day.
Meg serves as Volunteer Coordinator at our Newark facility and will celebrate her two-year anniversary with the Food Bank in June. While this career path wasn’t one she originally planned for, it has become one she finds both meaningful and rewarding.
After completing culinary training at Delaware Tech’s Stanton Campus, Meg spent seven years working as a pastry chef in Wilmington. But while creating sweet treats, she found herself thinking about something more.
“Growing up, I wanted to do something more helpful for the community,” she shared.
Those thoughts inspired her to seek a new direction. “I was looking for a change. I saw a job listing [for the Food Bank of Delaware], and I thought I could break through into the nonprofit space,” she said.
Meg’s connection to the mission is deeply personal. “I could have probably used the services when I was growing up. There were times when our family was food insecure. That made me passionate about our mission. The job felt like a good fit,” she added.
She quickly realized many of the skills she developed as a pastry chef translated naturally into her new role. “I was happy to contribute to helping others. I’m an organized person, and I had experience teaching new chefs at the bakery. This opportunity came at the perfect time,” she explained.
Like any new position, there were challenges along the way. “The biggest change was interacting with up to 100 new people in a day. We average about 25 volunteers per shift, but some days we also have an evening shift,” Meg said.
Because of the facility’s layout, Meg is often one of the first people volunteers meet as they enter the volunteer room to support the Newark Healthy Pantry. Her warm welcome and positive energy help set the tone for every shift.
With volunteer tasks constantly evolving to meet the needs of the day, no two shifts are exactly alike. Still, the shared purpose remains the same: helping neighbors in need.
“What got me interested is doing my part to help people, and sometimes it’s also about team building. It’s an opportunity to connect people who want to help others too,” Meg said.
One of the unexpected rewards of her role has been seeing the connections volunteers build with one another. “I see volunteers who come in regularly become friends and spend time together outside their shifts. I see corporate volunteer teams enjoying a break from the office. We have music playing, and people are having a good time.”
Meg’s collaborative spirit extends beyond her day-to-day responsibilities. She regularly volunteers to help set up graduations, assist at resource fairs, staff mass food distributions, and most recently, support a landscaping and planting project at our Milford facility.
“It’s good to see the people we serve and the impact we make at our smaller pantries too. We see people truly benefit from the Food Bank,” she said.
Meg believes the organization’s culture is what makes it especially meaningful. “I have worked in a lot of places, but the Food Bank is unique.
Everyone loves what they do, and they are doing their best. This is my first nonprofit experience — people trying to help people — and that makes it very special.”
The Employee of the Month award recognizes team members who go above and beyond while making a positive impact on those around them. Meg said she was surprised to receive the recognition.
“I was just doing my thing,” she said. “I’m happy to be doing my part and helping.”
