Now Open: The Discover Cafe at the Food Bank of Delaware

On Monday we officially opened the new Discover Cafe at the Food Bank of Delaware! The Discover Cafe is part of Delaware Food Works, our workforce development and social enterprise initiative. The Discover Cafe provides an opportunity for us to provide employment opportunities for current and past Culinary School graduates, while also generating revenue to support our workforce development programming. We had a good first week and look forward to serving even more customers – including you!
The cafe overlooks our four-acre farm, and from our outdoor patio, diners enjoy picturesque views of our lake! We are open Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and serve a variety of breakfast sandwiches, coffee drinks, homemade baked goods (everything is baked in house by Chef Instructor Tiarra Thomas!), fresh salads, sandwiches and more! Each day look for a daily hot entree special and soup of the day – all prepared here at the Food Bank in our culinary kitchen! Dine-in and take-out are both available at the cafe.
“Moving from 14 Garfield Way to 222 Lake Drive has afforded us the opportunity to increase our programming to the public,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “The cafe is just one of the many ways we can innovate to better serve our community and provide training opportunities for our students.”
The Culinary School, our 14-week culinary arts training program, and the Discover Cafe complement one another. Chopping fresh ingredients for cafe dishes provides a perfect opportunity for culinary students to practice their knife skills, while our curriculum on stocks and sauces provides real-life training in making homemade soups. Soups prepared by our students for sale in the cafe have included French onion, tomato, butternut squash, cream of mushroom, chicken noodle, potato rosemary and more! Outstanding student-prepared recipes will also be featured as daily hot entree specials.
