Ceremony honors grads, includes memorial scholarship gift

April 26, 2024

Wednesday, May 8 will be a celebratory day at the Food Bank of Delaware’s Milford facility: graduation ceremonies will be jointly held for the first Culinary School class at this site and for the inaugural L.O.G.I.C. class in Milford. In addition, there will be a scholarship presentation – another first – from the Chef Joey Schilling Memorial Foundation honoring one of the culinary grads.

Guest speaker Bob Moser has professional and personal ties to both the logistics/warehousing field, and he serves as the Foundation’s board secretary.  More importantly, though, are Moser’s personal and familial ties to Joey who died unexpectedly at age 30 in September 2022 while undergoing treatment relating to a chronic medical issue.  “I was Uncle Bob to Joey,” he said.

From a child, Joey loved to cook, and according to the Foundation’s web site he loved cooking so much that he decided to pursue it professionally. Joey graduated from The International Culinary Center in 2015 and worked at many great restaurants during his career as a chef – most recently as the Chef de Cuisine at Signatures in Bayside in Selbyville.  [The Mosers live in that community.]

In addition, Moser said Joey was known for his great sense of humor, coupled with an ability to successfully mentor and encourage kitchen staff.

After his passing, his family wanted to do something in Joey’s memory so they connected to the Food Bank of Delaware and to Indian River High School to present scholarships to fund culinary arts education.

Moser’s career in corporate relations and government affairs for Brenntag SE, an international chemical firm where he now serves as a consultant, linked his profession to his extensive involvement in the non-profit sector. He serves a board president for the Chemical Education Foundation based in Arlington, Va. That foundation provides STEM educational materials and training to schools, teachers and students nationwide.

We look forward to Moser’s keynote message, and we are honored to continue Joey’s legacy through this – and future – scholarship presentations.
