Safeway Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors Program Gives $4,290 Grant to Food Bank of Delaware

November 10, 2021

The Food Bank of Delaware recently received a $4,290 grant from Nourishing Neighbors. The grant was made possible by generous customers who visited Delaware Safeway stores during September and donated at checkout to help provide healthy breakfasts for children.

As the charitable partner for Safeway we are pleased to receive all of the funds collected from customers during the fundraiser. We plan to use the funds to help support our Backpack Program for children.

The Backpack Program provides food year-round to children in need for weekends and holidays when school is not in session and federal school meal programs are not available.

Backpacks are stocked with kid-friendly, nutritious food including shelf-stable milk and juice, meals such as macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs and beef stew, granola bars, apple sauce, cereal and more.

They are distributed on Fridays or the last day before a holiday or vacation in a discreet manner at schools.

Nourishing Neighbors is a charitable program of the Safeway Foundation. The program aims to eradicate childhood hunger in America by keeping food banks stocked and supporting meal distribution programs at schools. In 2020 Nourishing Neighbors enabled 350 million meals, invested $10.4 million in schools to feed kids, and provided $9 million towards empowering BIPOC communities through hunger programs.

The Food Bank of Delaware is proud to partner with Nourishing Neighbors to help fight hunger issues in our community.
