Sunshine, blue skies greet golfers for third annual golf tournament

September 19, 2016

Sunshine and clear blue skies welcomed 23 foursomes to Fieldstone Golf Club last Monday. It was the third annual Food Bank of Delaware golf tournament, and most would say it was our best yet!

Spearheaded by Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant co-owner Kevin Davies, this annual event has brought in close to $90,000 since its inception in 2014.

Event organizers work hard to make this tournament stand out from the rest of the many golf tournaments that take place in the state. The opportunity to to golf at one of the states most exclusive golf courses is a huge incentive for many participants. Not to mention, all proceeds benefit the Food Bank’s hunger-relief efforts in the First State! Upon arrival, golfers received a complimentary Antigua golf polo shirt and jacket.

The shotgun-style start began at 12:00 p.m., and it took golfers approximately 4.5 hours to complete 18 holes. Golfers had a chance to win a brand-new Infiniti car at hole eight. Shoot a hole-in-one and take home the car… sounds easy enough, right? Unfortunately, there were no winners. A putting contest also added additional competition for golfers. Carl Wolf, owner of Service Unlimited, was the only golfer to make it to the finals where he had to make a 40-yard put to win $1,000. Unfortunately, Carl didn’t walk away with the $1,000!

To close out the day, a bag piper put the course to “sleep,” a Scottish golf tradition. And participants enjoyed a cocktail hour featuring a sushi bar from Okura in Hockessin, passed hors d’oeuvres, a Kettle One vodka tasting and an awards ceremony! Kevin Davies and his foursome consisting of Francis Mangubat, Steve Danby and Pete Danby won the tournament with a score of 54!

“We have enjoyed beautiful weather for the past three years of golf here at Fieldstone,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO. “Thank you to all of the golfers who came out to support a community free of hunger. Special thanks to Kevin Davies and Iron Hill for helping to make this event such a success each year. We are already looking forward to next year!”
