New rewarding volunteer opportunities at the Food Bank of Delaware
February 26, 2024
Have some spare time? Want to lend a helping hand? Additional volunteers are needed to help with a variety of tasks at our new facility in Milford!
Since moving into the new building last month, we have been able to better meet the needs of neighbors living with food insecurity through new and expanded programs that help with short and long-term solutions.
In just the first month, we
- Assisted 1,406 households in the Healthy Pantry Center
- Started training 23 students for new careers in warehousing/logistics and culinary arts
- Distributed 709,983 meals through the new warehouse
- Had 914 volunteer visits for a total of 2,503 hours donated
- Constructed four high tunnels for the new 3.5-acre garden
These efforts rely on committed and consistent volunteers, specifically those who:
- Assist neighbors who visit the Healthy Pantry Center by registering, stocking shelves, and guiding them through the pantry.
- Sort donations and pack meal bags and boxes in the volunteer room
- Help to prep the new garden for the upcoming growing season
To educate the community about the new 3.5-acre garden and share more information about volunteer opportunities, a garden open house will take place on Tuesday, March 5. There will be three 45-minute sessions starting at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Interested attendees may select the time that works best and will get to meet Caroline May, Community Garden Manager, and Kyle Brolis, the Food Bank’s Agricultural Program Director.
