The 2016 National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive was another success. Through the collection efforts on Saturday, May 14the Food Bank of Delaware was the recipient of 145,291 pounds of food! The Letter Carriers’ drive is held at the perfect time of year. Donations are typically light during the spring and summer, which can make it hard to keep pantry shelves stocked. The donations we receive each year from this drive keep us going during this tough time.
On food drive day, Food Bank staff members and volunteers were out in full force at the post offices helping to load the donations onto trucks that were graciously donated by Bayshore Transportation and Bayshore’s Sister Company, ShoreView Moving & Storage. I was at the Newark Post Office for the third year in a row and it was a lot of work, but a worthwhile experience. We worked together with the Letter Carriers and their family and friends who showed up to help to load up donations and filled two trucks!
We want to congratulate the Letter Carriers on their 24th annual drive and send out a huge thank you to all of the carriers who participated in the drive as well as Food Lion who supplied the donation bags. It is a lot of work for the carriers on food drive day, picking up bag after bag of donations in addition to their normal mail delivery, and we recognize all of the effort that goes in to participating. Thank you for choosing Food Bank of Delaware as a recipient each year!
